Advancing Fracture Fixation: Rapid Recovery and Mobility

Fractures can be treated using various techniques, such as fracture fixation, which holds a critical role in conditioning broken bones to speed their healing process and to regain normal function. Fracture fixation, whether internal or external, determines how quickly a patient will return to full function, reduces the risk of complications, and gets them back on their feet sooner. At Dr. Akshay Shetty's Center of Orthopaedics, located in HSR Layout, Bangalore, advanced fracture fixation is implanted in the best possible way to provide the best possible care for each patient.

What is Fracture Fixation?

Fracture fixation refers to the stabilization of a fractured bone or bones so that they heal properly and without complications. Or, some fractures can heal correctly with conservative measures, such as by putting a plaster cast on them. Still, other fractures may need to be surgically stabilized to maintain adequate alignment during the healing process. External and internal fixation devices are used for the maintenance of bone alignment and favorable healing outcomes.

External Fixation:

External fixation is when a device is placed outside the body to stabilize a broken bone. It is often used for open fractures and fractures that have a very severe soft tissue injury. An external fixator can adjust and maintain the bone in the correct position to promote healing. The device is taken off when the bone is healed. This technique is often used in complex fractures because other techniques do not give enough stability.

Internal Fixation:

Internal fixation consists of the surgical placement of screws, plates, rods, or nails into a fractured bone to hold the object together. The internal stability it provides will keep the bone in its place during its healing. Titanium alloy implants used in internal fixation can be defined as MRI-compatible and safe for long-term use. It does not generally require removal unless it hurts.

When Fracture Fixation is Required?

Fracture fixation is necessary for those fractures that are very complicated, displaced, or fractured into more than two parts. Most simple fractures can be managed conservatively with either a simple cast or splint. Serious fractures, on the other hand, require surgery for optimal alignment of the fractures and healing.
