Know the Shoulder Joint and Bankart's Lesion

A shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint that affords stability and yet gives a high range of motion. In a normal shoulder, the head of humerus (the ball) remains firmly situated in the glenoid cavity (the socket). The glenoid labrum, a fibrocartilaginous ring surrounding the socket, helps joint stability just like a dam wall preventing the dislocation of the head of humerus.

This type of lesion that is caused when the labrum is torn accosting shoulder dislocations mostly resulting from sporting injuries or even from road traffic accidents causes instability around the shoulder joint and makes it more susceptible to either recurrent dislocations or apprehension.

Causes of Bankart's Lesion

Road Traffic Accident: The blow on the shoulder might easily pop the humeral head out of the glenoid socket, thereby tearing the labrum.

Sports Injuries: High-impact sports like football, hockey, and falling during sports including gymnastics, skating, and skiing might lead to shoulder dislocations.

Management of Bankart's Repair

Non-Operative Treatment:-

Conservative treatment is recommended for old, less active patients.

After the relocation of dislocation, the patient will be in a sling for 2 weeks, after which physiotherapy will follow for achieving mobility and strength.

Operative Treatment:-

In many patients younger than the age of 25, especially athletes, Bankart repair is almost always warranted since recurrent dislocation is more probable.

The tear of labrum does not heal spontaneously, making surgery necessary for the restoration of shoulder stability.

Arthroscopic (Keyhole) Surgery: The procedure is minimally invasive and performed under general anesthesia.
