Management of Meniscal Repair in HSR Layout
What is a Meniscus Tear?
The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage in the knee that serves as a shock absorber between the shin bone (tibia) and thigh bone (femur). There are two menisci in each knee: the medial meniscus (inner side) and the lateral meniscus (outer side). The medial meniscus is the one torn more commonly, whereas the lateral meniscus is mostly torn together with ACL tear injuries.
Over time, injuries to the meniscus can cause knee wear and tear (arthritis) and affect the proper functionality of the knee with a lot of pain involved.
Causes of Meniscus Tear
During sports or physical activities, the knee may twist or rotate and lead to a meniscus tear due to sudden changes: an aggressive pivot, an abrupt stop, and sharp turns.
Age is a common cause of degenerative tears with little trauma like twisting getting into the car.
Meniscus Tear Symptoms
Pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knee
Knee extension is not completely possible
A clicking or catching sensation while the limb is moving
More pain while twisting the knee
Locked knee (because of that tear getting stuck in place), also referred to as bucket handle tear.
Management of Meniscus Tear Some stable tears can be treated conservatively by using therapy combined with PRP injections.
For unstable tears or those associated with injury to the ligament, there may require repair of the meniscus employing a minimally invasive, arthroscopic method with stitches to repair the damaged tissue.
