Total Knee Replacement in HSR Layout, Bangalore
What is Total Knee Replacement?
Total Knee Replacement (TKR), also referred to as knee resurfacing, is a highly effective method for relieving joint and osteoarthritis pain associated with surgery. Only the depleted part of the knee is scraped and resurfaced with a metal alloy caps and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene under this advanced surgical technique. Contrary to what is popularly believed, there are no cuts in bones; they are only scraped carefully.
Pain relief, correction of structural deformities in legs, and restoration of mobility and function are the goals targeted by the TKR procedure. Post surgery, more than 95% of patients experience not only knee pain relief but also spend real time gaining functional benefits for their daily activities.
What Happens in the Course of Surgery?
The minimally invasive surgery is usually done through an incision measuring 6-10 cm.
Scraping on cartilage and bone from thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia).
Hooks to both femur and tibia are attached with metal alloy caps, while ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene spacer is placed between femur and tibia to act as the buffer.
The kneecap patella may also be substituted with a smooth plastic dome condition permitting findings during surgery.
Anesthesia Options
Regional Spinal Anesthesia: An injection into the lower back awakens but keeps the patient conscious to perform the procedure.
General Anesthesia: Put the patient to sleep for the duration of the surgery.
Recovery after Surgery
Post-surgery, you will be spending a few nights in the hospital.
Pain medications with antibiotics would be given.
Physical therapy after a short while would commence and promote early weight bearing and mobility, and patients would even walk on their very same surgery day.
You will be instructed on 5-6 exercises to do at home for proper recovery.
Resumption of Activities: After some time, you may be able to undertake light activities. However, complete recovery may take several months before you can resume all the activities you would engage in before surgery.
Possible Developments
Total knee replacement is generally considered a successful procedure; however, there are few complications that might manifest after a few years:
wear and/or loosening of the implant; the causes can be the implant itself wearing out over time or the loosening of the implant from the surrounding bone. In this case, revision procedure is required.
Infection: Any surgery bears a risk of infection. However, maximum aseptic precautions are taken; even then, infection can occur either during hospitalization or even, sometimes, years later.
Unbalanced ligaments: When the ligaments (MCL and LCL) around the knee are not properly balanced in surgery, it leads to instability and also leads to looseness of the implant.
Stiffness: Formation of scar tissue may cause stiffness about the knee. Most cases respond to physiotherapy, but some may require revision surgery.
Mostly, osteoporotic surrounding bones of the implant will sustain fractures because of a fall. Depending on the location and severity of the fracture, it can be treated either by fixation or by revision surgery.
